465: Bucket List

Do you have a bucket list?

Full episode script

Between 1999 and 2007, a screenwriter Justin Zackham kept a list pinned up on his bulletin board — that was a list of things he wanted to do before he kicked the bucket. That list happened to include having a major motion picture produced by a studio — and he succeeded. Specifically, he succeeded in having the movie “The Bucket List” produced and released in 2007 The movie — and even more so, the phrase, completely took off.

Now, there’s plenty of theories out there about the meaning of bucket list — is it something to fill your bucket with gratitude? Perhaps a metaphor about gathering the things that make you happy up in one spot? But the reality is, no matter how old you think it is, it actually has everything to do with a screenwriter thinking about kicking the metaphorical bucket.

Today, there’s even a bucketlist.org, where you can choose categories of items to add to your digital list, and keep track of each one. The most popular items on those lists, as of the day this script was written, include:
Swimming with dolphins
Learning a new language
Seeing the Aurora Borealis
Going on a cruise
Going skydiving
Riding in a hot air balloon
Going skydiving
Visiting a volcano
And throwing a dart at a map and traveling to wherever it lands

So what would be on your list – to check off before you kick the bucket, or even just before your next milestone?
